The University of Lynchburg, formerly Lynchburg College, is a private university in Lynchburg, Virginia, affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Established in 1903 by Dr. Josephus Hopwood as Virginia Christian College, it began on a 264-acre campus. Originally named Lynchburg College in 1919 due to its expanded reach, it was founded to fulfill a vision shared by Dr. Hopwood and his wife, Sarah Eleanor LaRue Hopwood. Notably, it was the first institution in the U.S. to train nuclear physicists and engineers for the NS Savannah project under President Eisenhower. Today, it serves around 2,800 undergraduate and graduate students.
