Arizona State University, or simply ASU is one of the biggest public colleges in the US by enrollment, ASU was established in 1885 as the Territorial Normal School by the 13th Arizona Territorial Legislature. It was one of perhaps 180 “normal schools” established in the late 1800s to prepare educators for the public common schools, which were expanding quickly at the time. Some closed, but the majority gradually increased their scope and transformed into state universities in the late 20th century after first being state colleges in the early 20th century.
