About World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Internship 2024

Opportunity Details

Students and recent graduates from all over the world who have experience in law, especially intellectual property law, or in other areas related to WIPO, including science and technology, finance, human resources, economics, communications, information technology, translation, and international relations, are eligible to apply for the WIPO Internship Program. There are certain internship slots in the program that are only available to citizens of Unrepresented Member States.

The WIPO Internship Program allows interns to gain knowledge of WIPO’s key values and goals while supporting WIPO’s mission to lead the development of an equitable and successful international intellectual property system that fosters innovation and creativity for the benefit of everyone.

Through their involvement in work within an international setting, interns have the chance to enhance their professional abilities and experience while also supplementing their education. Interns contribute to WIPO as well, offering new insights and up-to-date knowledge on research in their areas of expertise.

Categories and Duration of an internship:

Based on the interns’ degree of study, the WIPO Internship Program is divided into two groups.

Category 1:

  • Tْْhose who are in their third or fourth year of study toward a first-level university degree and/or who must complete an internship in order to fulfill degree requirements; or
  • Those who have earned their first-level university degree in less than two years from the date of the internship application; or
  • Those who are enrolled in their first advanced degree program at a university but have not finished their courses or final thesis.
  • First Category  internships are typically three months long. Subject to the Human Resources Management Department’s (HRMD) approval, Category I internships may be extended if the hiring program’s unique needs justify it. However, the internship’s overall maximum duration cannot exceed six months.

Category 2:

  • Those seeking an advanced degree for the first time who have finished their coursework but not their final thesis;
  • Those who have already earned an advanced degree and are seeking another one; or
  • Those who have earned their most recent advanced degree within the last two years from the date of the internship application.
  • Category II internships are typically three to six months in duration.
  • Subject to HRMD clearance, Category II internships may be prolonged if the hiring program’s unique needs thus warrant it. However, the internship’s overall maximum length cannot be longer than 12 months.
  • Unless otherwise specified, the terms and conditions of the WIPO Internship Program will be applicable to interns in both Category 1 and Category 2.

Benefits of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Internship 2024

  • A monthly allowance known as a stipend is given to interns with the aim of helping with accommodation, board, and local transportation costs. It is not meant to support the interns’ ongoing living expenses or those of their families; rather, it is not a wage or honorarium.
  • When appointed to the Geneva headquarters of WIPO:
    • A monthly stipend of 1,570 Swiss francs will be provided to interns in Category I, along with 70 Swiss francs for local transportation;
    • A monthly stipend of 2,070 Swiss francs will be provided to interns in Category II, along with 70 Swiss francs for local transportation.
    • The amount of the stipend for the WIPO external and coordination offices will be determined for each duty station after consulting with HRMD and taking local factors into consideration. The local currency will be used to pay the stipend.
    • A stipend from WIPO will not be given to interns who join the organization through a formal agreement with it or through one of its programs and who get money from another source (such as their home government or institution).

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Internship 2024 Requirements

  • People seeking or having earned a university degree;
  • Candidates for a first-level university degree must be in their third or fourth year of study and/or be enrolled in a program that requires them to complete an internship in order to graduate;
  • Graduates may submit an application for an internship no later than two years following the completion of their most recent degree.
  • Extremely strong command of French and/or English; It would be beneficial to know any of the following WIPO working languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic
  • Proficient use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other pertinent IT tools and programs.
