In celebration of this years World Environment Day, Hivos is inviting submissions from photographers and sketch artists with original work that capture environmental degradation and climate change in Zambia. The aim of the competition is to promote grassroots picture storytelling on issues affecting our environment and everyday life.
Opportunity Details
The submissions will be used to invoke discussions with Members and Parliament on what we need to do differently to mitigate and prevent further damage to our environment. We hope that this will be a way to excite and encourage communities to participate in debates on how the impacts of environmental degradation and climate change affect our wellbeing.
The sketches and photographs under each theme should capture the following:
How to Participate
Each participant will be required to fill out a short entry. Submit a short writeup of not more than 200 words accompanied with 3 to 4 photos that tell a story on any of our 4 thematic areas. The 4 thematic areas are (1) climate change, (2) biodiversity loss, (3) mining, and (4) environmental degradation and pollution. Participants should clearly indicate under which thematic area they are applying. The entries can either capture the devastating effects as the current state or the mitigation efforts as the aspired future. A panel of technical judges will be constituted to shortlist 16 entries (4 from each category) whose work will be published on Hivos and partner websites and social media page(s) and in a picture story book on ‘The state of climate change and environment in Zambia” to be presented and distributed at COP 30. The shortlisted candidates will receive recognition as climate champions. On World Environment Day (5th June, 2025), the 16 finalists will be invited to a final ceremony graced by the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment as well as Members of Parliament. 4 winners from the shortlisted entries will be selected and presented with a monetary prize.
