Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships 2024/25 Requirements

All prospective applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Citizenship
This scholarship application is open to Canadian Citizens, Permanent residents, and International students.

Vanier CGS Eligibility
To qualify for a Vanier CGS, candidates must:

  • Have a nomination from only one Canadian institution with a Vanier CGS quota.
  • Be pursuing their first PhD degree, including joint programs (MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD) with a significant research component.
  • Intend to undertake full-time doctoral (or joint graduate research) studies and research at the nominating institution in the summer or academic year following the result announcement. Only the PhD portion of joint programs is eligible for funding.
  • Have not completed more than 20 months of full-time doctoral study by May 1, 2025. It includes time from the doctoral enrollment date after completing a master’s degree.
  • Have completed no more than 32 months of full-time doctoral study by May 1, 2025, if enrolled in joint graduate research programs or direct-entry PhD programs. Study time is calculated from the doctoral enrollment or master’s registration date for joint programs.
  • Achieve a first-class average, as defined by their institution, in the last two years of full-time study. Candidates should verify their institution’s definition of a first-class average. Institutions may accept applications from those who have not obtained a first-class average at their discretion.
  • Not have received a PhD-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC for the same doctoral program.

Eligibility of Program of Study

  • Eligible PhD programs must include a significant research component leading to a thesis, dissertation, major research project, scholarly publication, performance, recital, or exhibit reviewed at the institutional level.
  • Joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD) and clinically oriented programs like clinical psychology are eligible if they include a significant autonomous research component.

  • Institutional Nomination: Candidates must be nominated by their institution.
  • Application Submission: Through ResearchNet, reviewed internally by the nominating institution
  • Review and Evaluation: Conducted by the Vanier-Banting Secretariat between November 2024 and March 2025.
  • Final Decision: Endorsed and approved by the Tri-agency Programs Steering Committee
  • Notification: Successful nominees will be notified by early April 2025.
