IFCD is available for projects that can lead to tangible progress in the development of creative industries in developing nations. Proposals may be submitted by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), public institutions from nations that qualify, and international NGOs that are registered in nations that are Parties to the 2005 Convention. Surprisingly, the project ideas ought to support the following:

  • The execution and development of tactics and guidelines that directly affect the production, development, dissemination, and availability of a wide range of cultural products and services on a structural level
  • The development of state institutions’ and civil society groups’ capacity to sustain thriving regional marketplaces and industries for culture.

The 2005 UNESCO Convention on the Promotion and Protection of Cultural Expressions Diversity established the IFCD, a multi-donor fund, to help developing nations carry out the Convention. Increasing the growth of vibrant cultural industries in developing countries is the aim.

Using IFCD, UNESCO has contributed $11.5 million in total to over 152 projects in 71 developing nations since 2010.These programs have aided in the creation and execution of cultural policies, promoted cultural entrepreneurship, enhanced professional development, facilitated access to new markets, and included and included marginalized groups in cultural life.

Benefits of UNESCO International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD)

A maximum of US$ 100,000 may be requested by applicants, and it must be paid in three installments as follows:

  • Beginning of the project: 50%
  • Mid-way through the project: 30 %
  • Completion of the project: 20%

Project Eligibilities:

The IFCD funds initiatives that result in systemic change by:

  • The introduction and/or development of laws and regulations that directly impact the development, manufacturing, dissemination, and availability of a wide range of cultural expressions, including cultural products, services, and endeavors;
  • Strengthening the institutional and human resources of civil society and public sector organizations, as judged required to sustain sustainable local and regional marketplaces and industries for culture in emerging nations.

Note: All application documents should be in English or French.

Selection Criteria

The IFCD team will evaluate applications for funding requests against the following criteria:

  • Does the initiative take into account the 2005 Convention and the IFCD’s goals, priorities, and areas of intervention?
  • Fulfills the requirements and priorities of the State in which the applicant plans to carry out the project, and the project is both relevant and doable.
  • Helps achieve results that are quantifiable, tangible, achievable, and sustainable
  • Has a strong structural influence that promotes the growth of a vibrant cultural industry
  • Encourages collaboration between North and South South Africa Makes sure that the project’s long-term advantages are attainable and encourages the project’s sustainability
  • Complies with the financial responsibility principle
  • The abilities and proficiency of essential personnel carrying out the suggested tasks, as well as the participation of interested parties in the planning and execution of the project.

An International Experts Panel will evaluate the capacity of the applicant for implementing the work plan and manage the budget, and ensuring that:

  • Extra costs do not exceed 30% of the total budget
  • The requested funds are principally for project activities
  • Resources are not spread too thinly and do not support sporadic activities
