About Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign Innovation Fellowship

Opportunity Details

The 10-month Biodesign Innovation Fellowship program equips aspiring innovators with the skills necessary to identify pressing medical needs, create innovative health technologies (like drug delivery, medical devices, diagnostics, digital health, and biotechnology solutions), and prepare those products for patient care integration through start-ups, large corporations, or other channels.

The Stanford Biodesign Innovation Fellowship program trains participants in the repeatable, effective Biodesign innovation process that is used to identify, create, and apply cutting-edge health solutions. The Stanford Biodesign community, a permanent worldwide network of innovators motivated by a goal to enhance healthcare, is expanded to include the Innovation Fellows.

Work Areas:

Backgrounds in three areas:

  • Engineering, computer science, design, and/or business.

Every squad consists of four comrades.

Benefits of Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign Innovation Fellowship

  • The fellowship is a demanding, full-time program that spans from early August to early June every year.
  • During their fellowship, Stanford Biodesign Innovation Fellows receive health coverage in addition to a monthly stipend.

The Stanford Biodesign Innovation Fellowship can help you launch, redirect, or develop your career in health technology innovation. Graduates from the program apply their expertise to:

  • Encourage innovation in large biotechnology, diagnostic, digital health, and medical device companies
  • Create your own health technology companies.
  • Instruct or oversee translational research initiatives in prestigious universities.
  • Encourage innovation in medical facilities, whether they are private or university.
  • Develop your expertise in design, finance, or other facets of the ecosystem for health technology innovation.
  • Additionally, the Stanford Biodesign community welcomes you into a lifetime global network of innovators dedicated to advancing healthcare.

Fellows will learn the following:

  • Creativity among significant health technology companies, acting as a catalyst.
  • Will be capable of starting their own health technology businesses.
  • Run a translational research program or instruct one for prestigious universities.
  • Create innovative projects in collaboration with public or private healthcare facilities.
  • Will possess expertise in design, finance, or other domains within the health technology innovation ecosystem.

Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign Innovation Fellowship Requirments

  • Open to applications from all nations.
  • Accepting applications from individuals with advanced degrees and/or substantial work experience in engineering, business, computer science, biological sciences, product design, law, medicine, or nursing
  • The history, drive, and likelihood of becoming well-known innovators in the health technology field will all be taken into consideration when choosing the fellows.

Selection Criteria:

  • The selection of fellows will be based on their qualifications, drive, and capacity to become industry leaders in the field of health technology innovation.

Application Requirements:

  • Respond to essay questions:
    • What connection does the Stanford Biodesign Innovation Fellowship have to your future aspirations? How do you plan to use your training after the fellowship ends? (No more than 300 words)
    • Everybody has come to their current place in life via a unique journey. Please share with us some of the challenges and roadblocks you have faced. What impact have these experiences had on who you are now? (No more than 300 words)
    • Assume the role of the company’s founder, testing a novel medical technology before it receives regulatory approval. Time and money are of the essence, and your investors anticipate that the regulatory file will be completed in a matter of weeks. The latest results from your clinical trial are promising, and your technology works and is safe. Upon deeper examination, a consultant discovers that most of the study’s subjects are men of Caucasian descent with similar socioeconomic backgrounds. The problem you are trying to tackle affects people of all sexes, genders, and socioeconomic and racial origins. How would you respond? (No more than 300 words)

  • English proficiency certificate (To participate in the fellowship, you must speak and write English well. You do not have to submit the results of an English proficiency test if your most recent degree was obtained from a college or university where English is the primary language of teaching. If not, kindly submit your TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE results from a test taken within the previous 24 months.)
  • Transcript of most recent degree
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Video 
    • There are a plethora of ways to make a difference in a team, such as planning, directing, researching extensively, developing novel concepts, quickly prototyping, and/or building cohesiveness among the group. In two minutes or less, tell them about the two to three team roles that you most often play. Upload the video to Vimeo or YouTube instead of included it with your application materials. To keep your recording private, use the “unlisted” option. Since your video will be evaluated by many reviewers and separately from the rest of your application materials, they ask that you comply with this request.
    • Then, send them the video by pasting the link into the following Qualtrics form linked below. A video link can only be uploaded once to Qualtrics. Once your video link has been submitted, you won’t be able to change it.

Application Date and Process

Video Submission Guidelines:

  • Avoid going over two minutes, as it won’t be seen after that.
  • You should only videotape yourself from the shoulders up; do not include any other people, objects, or videos. What they are looking for is your ability to respond and communicate, not your ability to edit videos.
  • If at all feasible, use a webcam or smartphone/video camera mounted on a tripod to guarantee a stable recording.
  • Please make sure the video can be seen at that URL before submitting the link.
  • Don’t discuss any unique intellectual property you have created that isn’t legally protected.
