The Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists was established by Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and SciLifeLab to honor outstanding young researchers from throughout the globe. The prize was established with the foresight to acknowledge that a thriving research community is essential to the health of the global economy. A vision that will only materialize if we support the most talented individuals in their chosen fields of study.

Categories:

  • Cell and Molecular Biology: This area encompasses research into cellular and molecular processes at all levels, from single molecules to single cells to tissues and organ systems.
  • Genomics, Proteomics, and Systems Biology Approaches: This category of research focuses on genomics, proteomics, integrated omics, and systems biology approaches, including computational methods, to promote a comprehensive knowledge of living cells, organisms, and species.
  • Ecology and Environment: This category of research focuses on the interactions between organisms and their surroundings, as well as how human activity affects them.
  • Molecular Medicine: This category of research seeks to advance our understanding of disease at the molecular level in order to develop preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic techniques, including tailored medicine.

Benefits of Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists

Benefits:

  • Every year, US$30,000 is awarded to the main prize winner, and US$10,000 is given to the champions of each of the categories.
  • Essays from the categories winners will be published online, and the grand prize winner will be published in Science. Science/AAAS and SciLifeLab eagerly await the evaluation of research results from next participants.
  • The four winners of the prizes will travel to Sweden for the prize ceremony, which coincides with the Nobel Prize ceremony. They will also present their work at a scientific symposium and be invited to a number of social events where they will have the opportunity to network with eminent scientists in their respective fields. Each winner is permitted to invite one guest to the celebration.

Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists Requirements

Criteria:

  • Welcomes people from all countries without regard to sex, race, or nationality.
  • Those who meet the eligibility requirements must have received their PhD in 2022 or 2023.
  • Recipients will only be allowed to claim the prize for work completed while still a graduate student.

Selection Criteria:

  • Initially, three finalists from each Subject Track will be chosen by Science editors once they have screened the essays. Subsequently, a group of scientists led by the Chief Science Editor will choose a winner for every Subject Track. The grand prize will then be up for grabs for the four winners. By October, the grand prize winner and the winners of the three categories will be determined. The winners will be announced and the judging process will be managed by science.

Application Date and Process

The entrant must submit the following items:

  • An Entry Form that has been filled out.
  • An essay that the applicant wrote outlining the thesis project and how it relates to future research in the chosen Subject Track. The essay may have one figure or table and cannot be more than 1,000 words.
  • A one-page recommendation letter from a thesis committee member or advisor. An evaluation of the applicant and a statement regarding the importance of the applicant’s study should be included in the letter.
  • The thesis abstract (no more than four typed pages, double-spaced).
  • An enumeration of the following:
    • Complete citations for any articles published or under press that discuss the research the essay describes;
    • Awards and distinctions the applicant has won in academia and the workplace; and
    • Relevant work experience.
  • All required submission materials, including the Entry Form, must be sent electronically using their prize administration system.
