The Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society (SRI) is pleased to announce our 2025 call for graduate fellows, open to current U of T students across all three campuses whose work explores the social impacts of technology and who are committed to ensuring that advanced technologies benefit all of society.

Schwartz Reisman Institute Graduate Fellowships are awarded for a one-year term, with an opportunity to renew as an affiliate. Applications are now open and must be submitted by February 9, 2025, at 11:59 PM ET.

Benefits of Schwartz Reisman Institute Graduate Fellowships

Fellowship

  • The Graduate Fellows program will provide $7,500 over one year in support for up to 15 remarkable scholars at the University of Toronto.

In addition to financial support, graduate fellows will have networking and professional development op- portunities, including co-developing a workshop with their cohort.

Schwartz Reisman Institute Graduate Fellowships Requirements

  • Fellows will be primarily PhD candidates at University of Toronto; however exceptional masters candidates are eligible to apply.
  • They encourage applications from scholars investigating issues at the intersection of advanced technologies and society, as well as those with an emerging interest in these areas.
  • Applicants who have not previously received an SRI fellowship will be given priority.

Evaluation Criteria

SRI Graduate Fellows will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Quality of research proposal.
  • Alignment with research goals and priorities.
  • Potential impact as an emerging scholar.
  • Ability to engage with a multidisciplinary research community.
  • Diversity of perspective.

Terms for Schwartz Reisman Institute Graduate Fellows

  • Participate in a weekly meeting of the 2025-26 SRI Graduate Fellows cohort.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of an interdisciplinary group project.
  • Attend weekly seminars and other research events hosted by the Schwartz Reisman Institute.
  • Contribute to the development of   multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research community by engaging with other fellows, research leads, and faculty affiliates.
  • With the support of SRI's communications team, contribute at least one public-facing product relating to the proposed research (e.g., publication, blog post, op-ed, interview).
  • Submit a final report summarizing all fellowship activities by April 30, 2026.

Application Date and Process

To be considered, you must fill out the online application form, which includes the following:

1. A research statement (PDF) with responses to the following questions:

  • Describe the area of research you are pursuing (approx. 750 words).
  • Research goals and priorities, highlighting specific areas of interest you would like to explore as part of the Institute (approx. 500 words).
  • Describe your interest in, and how you would approach, working with a multidisciplinary research community (approx. 500 words). If applicable, how did a specific experience inform your interests? Do you have any experience with leading interdisciplinary and/or multidisciplinary research activities? Why is this a good time in your graduate program to engage with SRI?
  • Optional: Describe how your proposed project and scholarship engages with principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (approx. 500 words).

2. A copy of your curriculum vitae (PDF).

3. A copy of your transcript (PDF).

4. Up to three examples of your writing and research (PDF; publications preferred).

5. A letter of reference from a referee describing your potential as a scholar (max. 300 words). Your referee must send this letter directly to [email protected] before the application deadline.
