About Saint Andrews Prize for the Environment

The Saint Andrews Prize for the Environment is a significant international effort established by the University of St Andrews that recognizes and promotes creative and inspiring solutions to environmental concerns such as climate catastrophe. It is managed by Professor Ineke De Moortel FRAS FRSE, Master of the United College.
Since 1998, the Prize has awarded more than $2 million to people and organizations worldwide for innovative ideas safeguarding the environment and promoting a more sustainable society. The Prize, now in its 26th year, seeks to highlight the individuals and ideas solving the biggest problem of our time.

Saint Andrews Prize for the Environment Requirements
To be eligible, a project must meet the following requirements:
- A well-established project with a track record of success.
- Be relevant to sustainable development or biodiversity and align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- Be scalable in size and reproducible from one geographic location to another.
- Have a well-defined financing requirement.
- Have the capacity to motivate and inspire people in your area.
- In the short to long term, contribute to the worldwide goal of sustainability.
- Maintain solid ethical standards regarding intellectual property and its interaction with people and the environment.
- It must be all-inclusive.
Ineligible projects are:
- Projects in the concept, pilot, or prototype phase.
- Projects for research.
- Initiatives that provide a little environmental benefit.
- Large infrastructure initiatives, such as building construction.
- Programs focusing on special interest groups or excluding specific social sections.
- Events that occur regularly or annually but are unrelated to a new endeavor.
- Initiatives involving political activity, lobbying, or religious organizations.
- Initiatives that are solely intended to raise funds.
Selection Process
Following are the selection process details:
- The Screening Committee reviews entries; a shortlist is created for the Trustees’ consideration.
- Shortlisted applicants are invited to submit project summary videos and provide independent references.
- Three projects were selected for the St Andrews Prize for the Environment final on October 30-31 at the University of St Andrews.
- Finalists are required to be present in St Andrews from October 29 – November 1, 2024.
- Entry forms and presentations must be in English; translators are permitted if needed, and the applicant pays for them.
- Judges reserve the right to reject entries lacking a satisfactory confidence level.

- Complete the application form detailing the project, success, and plans; save regularly.
- Submit your entry in English by clicking the ‘Submit’ button; amend before the deadline if needed.
- Judges seek compelling overview, evidence of success, innovation, and alignment with UN Goals.
- Provide clear, detailed, concise information; avoid assumptions, repetition, and irrelevant details.
