The New Media is accepting applications for its Writing Prize 2024/2025, which is open to international applicants outside the UK . The NMWP (New Media Writing Prize) honors innovative and attractive stories and poetry that use various formats, platforms, and digital media to tell their stories. Whether the applicant is a writer, a student, an artist, a designer, a professional, a developer, or an enthusiast, the competition is open to all. This international competition entry is also available to all outside the UK. Please remember that your access should be in English.

What Does the New Media Writing Prize Look for?
New Media Writing Prize is looking for good storytelling (fiction or nonfiction) written specifically for delivery, reading, or viewing on a PC Mac, the web, or a portable device such as a mobile phone or an iPad.
It could be a short story, novel, poem, narrative game, documentary, or transmedia work with audience interaction that uses words, images, film, or animation. Interactivity is an important component of new-media storytelling. They are looking for creativity, so try to be imaginative to create an engaging story, such as combining words on a screen with images and video clips.
Entrants can create new media writing using a word processor, DV camera, social networking tools (such as Twitter), mobile phones, a scanner, Augmented Reality software, or anything else.
New Media Writing Competition Requirements
The winning entry in each category will receive the following prize:
- The Chris Meade Memorial United Kingdom New Media Writing Prize: £1000 from if: book UK/Chris Meade
- The Student Award: To Be Decided (TBD)
- The Opening Up Award: £500
- The Digital Journalism Award: £500 + one year’s FIPP membership
- The IDN for Social Good Award: £500
- Application is open to everyone, whether the applicant is a writer, a student, a professional, an artist, a developer, a designer, or an enthusiast.
- It’s an international competition with participants from all around the world.
- Entries must be in English.
What Should the Entrants Provide?
Entries of all entrants who apply for the New Media Writing Competition 2024-2025 should contain the following materials:
- Work title
- Access details of the entry, such as URL, download instructions, and app access code if necessary (if an app access code is required, they require six free codes for the judges).
- Contact information for the entrant, including name, email address, phone number, mailing address, city, and country.
- For joint submission, all entrants’ contact information must be together with the principal entrant’s identification for contact reasons.
- A brief autobiography of the contestant (50-100 words).
- All entrants in joint entries must submit their autobiographies.
- Students must provide proof of identity, which should be pasted into the entry form in the short biography part, such as a scanned copy of the entrant’s Student Union ID card or university enrollment number, which will be authenticated at the organizer’s discretion.
Points to NOTE:
Use new (digital) media or transmedia inventively to create an engaging, satisfying fictional or nonfictional narrative, poem, or other story form.
- The reader/viewer should find it easy to navigate.
- Effective use of interactive components
- Example of how new media can accomplish things that old media cannot.
- Be able to reach out to many people (i.e., not just specialist interest groups).
- All entries, regardless of category, must be written in English.
- The core of writing for new Media writing is excellent storytelling that takes advantage of all that digital media offers and user/audience interaction.
Ineligible Entries
The following entries are not eligible for the 2023/24 New Media Writing Competition:
- Text-only story or poem that you can easily upload to a website or record to a CD.
- Word documents and PDFs that aren’t interactive aren’t eligible.
- Words on a screen that you’ve uploaded to your blog
- A film or a slideshow of photographs uploaded to Flickr or YouTube.
Application Date and Process
- Applicants should use the online application forms and submit entries for any prizes.
- Each entry should include an active URL for the judges to see your work.
- If you intend to view your item on a mobile phone, wearable device, or other electronic device, please include explicit instructions on how to view it.
