Through this competition, UN-Habitat is expanding its engagement with Afghan youth, encouraging children and teenagers to imagine and showcase the urban landscapes they wish to live in. Whether from rural or urban backgrounds, participants can contribute their artwork through drawings, sketches, or designs that reflect their ideal city—one that values community, safety, and inclusiveness for all.

As part of a global initiative by UN-Habitat, this competition provides a platform for artistic expression. It fosters a deeper dialogue on urban development that resonates with the aspirations of young Afghans. The top artworks will be celebrated and showcased, enabling participants to contribute their voices to meaningful urban discussions and see their vision come to life.

What’s the Competition?

Imagine a city that perfectly reflects your vision of an ideal community. What does it look like? Is it filled with vibrant parks, bustling schools, modern hospitals, or cozy neighborhoods? Participants are welcome to join the competition by creating a drawing, painting, or design of their imaginary city—the city they want to live in.

 

Benefits of My Urban Vision Art Competition

  • Recognition: The top 10 submissions will be showcased on the UN-Habitat and UN-Women Afghanistan website.
  • Networking Opportunity: The top three candidates in each age group will be invited to participate in discussions with UN teams and partners.
  • Publication: Selected artworks will be featured in publications by UN-Habitat and UN-Women.
  • Awareness: The competition fosters awareness and engagement in urban development issues among young Afghans.

My Urban Vision Art Competition Requirements

The competition has three age groups or categories highlighted as follows:

  • Entry is open to young people in Afghanistan across three age groups:
    • Below 12 years old
    • 12-18 years old
    • Over 18 years old
  • Participants must be Afghan citizens residing in Afghanistan.
  • All submissions must represent the participant’s vision of an ideal urban environment.
  • All entrants must agree that their artwork, can be published and used by UN-Habitat and UN-Women.

Required Material

The submissions must meet these requirements:

  • Artwork submission (drawing, painting, or digital design)
  • Have a title of the artwork
  • Age of the artist
  • Digital submission format:
    • Hand drawings should be scanned and cleaned.
    • Painted artwork should be photographed or scanned.
    • Digital designs should be exported as PDF files.

Selection Process

The selection process for the submissions are as follows:

  • Initial Screening: Submissions will be reviewed to ensure compliance with guidelines.
  • Selection Committee Review: The selection committee from UN-Habitat and UN-Women Afghanistan will assess each entry based on creativity, theme alignment, and originality.
  • Announcement of Results: Top 10 entries will be announced by December 15, 2024, and published on the host organizations’ website.
  • Top 3 Candidates Engagement: The top three candidates in each age group will be invited for a discussion to share their ideas with the UN teams and partners.

Participating is easy. Here are the steps to enter the competition:

  • Create your artwork representing your vision of an ideal urban environment.
  • Ensure the artwork meets the guidelines:
    • Hand-drawn pieces must be scanned cleanly.
    • Painted artwork should be scanned or photographed.
    • Digital designs should be saved as PDFs.
  • Send your submission by November 31, 2024 via email to [email protected], including:
    • The title of your artwork
    • Your age
  • The winners will be announced on December 15, 2024.
