About MOFA Taiwan Fellowship Program

Opportunity Details

Since its inception, the Fellowship has supported over 1,400 scholars from 93 countries, allowing them to explore their research topics deeply. This program aligns with the APEC Scholarship Initiative, providing 12 Chinese Taipei APEC Fellowship openings annually for scholars from developing APEC economies.

The Taiwan Fellowship provides substantial financial assistance, including monthly grants, travel subsidies, and accident insurance, ensuring that scholars can focus entirely on their research. The program also facilitates connections with Taiwanese academic institutions, promoting collaborative research and knowledge exchange.

Benefits of MOFA Taiwan Fellowship Program

The following are the benefits of the Taiwan Fellowship for 2025:

  • Monthly Grants:
    • NT$60,000 for professors, associate professors, research fellows, or associate research fellows
    • NT$50,000 for assistant professors, assistant research fellows, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, and other qualified candidates
  • Travel Subsidy:
    • One round-trip economy-class ticket with a maximum subsidy based on the region (e.g., NT$35,000 for Northeast and Southeast Asia, NT$90,000 for Africa)
  • Insurance:
    • Accident insurance with coverage up to NT$1 million for accidental death and NT$50,000 for accident injury medical benefits

MOFA Taiwan Fellowship Program Requirments

Fellows must be:

  • A foreign national
  • Be professors, associate professors, assistant professors, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, doctoral program students, or research fellows at related departments of overseas universities or academic institutions.
  • Candidates must be recommended by Taiwan (ROC) overseas missions with a study field on Taiwan’s foreign or cross-strait relations.
  • Not currently conducting research, teaching, or studying in Taiwan

Required Documents

The application required documents are as follows:

  • Completed online application form
  • Resume (including a publication list)
  • Research proposal (approximately three pages)
  • Two recommendation letters or one recommendation letter and one consent letter from the chief administrator of the applicant’s institute

Selection Process

The selection process for the 2025 Taiwan Fellowship is as follows:

  1. Initial Review: The ROC Embassy or Representative Office receives, verifies, and evaluates the applicant’s academic potential.
  2. Recommendation: The ROC Embassy or Representative Office provides reasons for recommending the candidate to the evaluation committee.
  3. Committee Evaluation: MOFA forms an evaluation committee of scholars, experts, and representatives to screen candidates.
  4. Final Step: Candidates submit a “Letter of Consent for Research” from Taiwanese universities or institutions to MOFA, completing the application process.

Application Date and Process

  1. Online Application: Complete the application form on the Taiwan Fellowship website and upload the required documents.
  2. Submission to ROC Offices: Print the complete application form and post all documents to the ROC Embassy or Representative Office.
  3. Notification: Selected candidates will be informed by email.
  4. Consent Letter: Contact ROC universities or research institutions to obtain a consent letter and send it to the Taiwan Fellowship team by December 31 (submission email: [email protected][email protected], or [email protected])
  5. Grant Authorization: Receive the “Grant Authorization Letter” and apply for the “FR” visa.
  6. Commence Research: Begin research in Taiwan as an officially recognized Taiwan Fellowship recipient.
