Opportunity Details

McDonnell International Scholars Academy Fellowship fosters a community of academically and culturally diverse leaders who will address the world’s most challenging challenges by promoting positive and long-term change. Additionally, through its long-standing international connections, it promotes new ideas that improve collaborative multidisciplinary research.

The McDonnell Academy chooses Scholars based on their outstanding academic achievement and commitment to learning about international challenges and global leadership. Furthermore, the Academy considers applicants’ academic distinction, global mindset, leadership, and community.

Benefits of McDonnell International Scholars Academy Fellowship in the U.S.

McDonnell Scholars will receive financial and programmatic support as follows:

  • full tuition and a monthly living stipend;
  • a relocation expense allowance and travel allowance;
  • opportunity to reside in private, modern cohort housing within walking distance to campus, and;
  • multifaceted instruction, cultural experiences, dedicated mentorship, and an expansive worldwide network of students and alumni.

McDonnell International Scholars Academy Fellowship in the U.S. Requirments

McDonnell International Scholars Academy? Applicants from all countries and institutions are eligible. However, priority goes to international graduate candidates who are graduates of one of the Academy’s Partner Universities.

Applicants must have earned or plan to earn a bachelor’s degree or higher before the end of the 2024-2025 academic year (July 2025).

This fellowship is not available for undergraduate studies.

You must be applying to a WashU doctoral or master’s program listed below and meet one of the following criteria:

  • Partner Applicants (Partner Scholars): Graduates of one of the McDonnell Academy’s 30+ partner universities. Priority is given to these candidates.
  • International Applicants (Global Scholars): Non-U.S. citizens who graduated from institutions outside the partner network, either internationally or U.S.-based. Limited fellowships are available.
  • Domestic Applicants (U.S. Scholars): U.S. citizens who earned degrees from U.S. or international institutions. Limited fellowships are available.

Additional Notes:

  • International students with U.S. degrees are eligible.
  • Current WashU graduate students are ineligible.
  • Apply via the WashU graduate application portal after submitting your program application.

Application Date and Process

The McDonnell Academy application is integrated into the WashU graduate application portal.

After you submit your application for an eligible WashU doctoral or master’s degree program, a link to apply for the McDonnell Academy fellowship will become available on your WashU status page. For programs that fall outside the WashU graduate application portal, such as JD, MPH, MD, and others, you will be provided with specific instructions on how to apply for the McDonnell Academy fellowship following the submission of your application.
