About Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) Research Fellowship

The MIF was established to increase chances for a deeper comprehension of Japan and enduring global peace. The fully-funded research fellowship program, made available to you by the MIF, promises to pay for any necessary costs that would prevent you from engaging in productive international travel. You will get the opportunity to learn about Japanese customs and culture during your visit, which helped to rebuild Japan’s peaceful society following the devastation of the great war. Japan has therefore been involved in imparting to young minds this kind of scientific and technological information, which would enable them to contribute to the solution of societal problems. Benefits of Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) Research Fellowship
The below financial supports are provided to the fellows:
- A JPY 220,000 monthly stipend for living costs and research supplies; health insurance;
- Round-trip airfare to Tokyo in economy class from the fellow’s native nation;
- JPY 120,000 will be given to the fellow upon arrival to cover their initial travel expenses;
Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) Research Fellowship Requirements
- An invitation letter from a Japanese host institution should have been obtained by the applicant;
- Possess finished a doctoral degree; the applicant’s age upon application shall not exceed 45 years old;
- Proficiency in Japanese or English;
- In addition to brief visits for conferences and sight-seeing, applicants should have professional experience in Japan. They also need to pledge to return to their home countries upon program completion.
- Applicants may choose to conduct their research at any of Japan’s universities, government research institutes, or equivalent private-sector establishments. Prior to applying, please get an admission letter from the host university.
Required documents:
- Application form (Download at the main website, founded below). Its recommended to fill out the form appropriately and attach your photograph (not more than three months and one MB in size), as well as sign and date the application form;
- A research project proposal containing (the purpose of the research, methodology, the road map, and benefits it will bring to your home country. The purpose and methods of your research should be in detail in close coordination with your host professor in Japan;
- One most important publication (if not available in English, you are asked to attach the abstract in English;
- A Curriculum Vitae: Include the applicant’s list of all publications (details of publication like date, place, co-authors, number of pages);
- A recommendation letter from your employer demonstrating your academic abilities and achievements and confirming the availability of study leave for the period of your fellowship program. The letter should be on the institution’s letterhead;
- A Soft copies of academic certificates (Ph.D., master’s, and bachelor’s degrees in English);
- Invitation letter by your host professor/scholar in charge at the host university in Japan on their letterhead. This information must be written in Japanese: Name of the host institution, name of host professor/scholar, email address of host professor, postal code, mailing address, and Telephone of host institution;
Note:
- In your Application Form, indicate the length of your stay as well as the beginning and ending months. (For example, from September 2023 to February 2024.)
- The following documents must be emailed to the MIF as PDFs.
- All documentation must be typed in English.
- Incomplete documents will be rejected.
The following will be rejected automatically and without notice.
- Emails larger than 10 MB.
- Emails with attachments that do not have the file extension “pdf.”
- Emails containing attachments in any compressed format, such as “zip” or “rar.”
- Emails containing any program files or download links

Screening Process:
- The MIF Screening Committee evaluates applications based on educational value and the degree of perfection of the research projects. The results will be announced on the MIF’s website in late November 2024.
- Successful applicants will receive a grant letter from the MIF.
- The MIF has a policy of not disclosing the content of Screening Committee discussions or accepting inquiries about individual applications. The MIF will not comment on the reasons for the Screening Committee’s decisions.
