Opportunity Details

Every year, a professional female photographer who has finished an engaging and well-organized documentary photo essay addressing a significant social, economic, environmental, or cultural issue—local or global—wins the Nikon Award, which is organized by FotoDocument. The work need to, to some extent, show how to resolve whatever problems it brings up, in accordance with Marilyn Stafford’s desires and FotoDocument’s objectives. Only documentary photographers who are working on initiatives that try to improve the world but might not receive enough media attention are eligible for this award.

Benefits of Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award for Professional Female Photographers

  • One overall winner will receive a £2,500 Marilyn Stafford Foto Reportage Award to help them finish their project.
  • The finished product will be advertised on FotoDocument’s website and on social media.
  • One of the photos from the shortlisted candidates will be shown on Foto Document’s website and encouraged on social media. While they will do everything in their power to secure coverage in foreign media, no assurances will be given.

Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award for Professional Female Photographers Requirements

  • The target audience for this award is female documentarian photographers.
  • Photographers in their early to mid-career stages are encouraged to apply.
  • The minimum age requirement is 18, with no upper age limit.
  • Eligible students are those seeking a postgraduate degree in photography.
  • Photographers are able to reside and operate globally.
  • Applicants who have already applied may reapply with a new project or the same project if it has changed significantly.
  • Photographers are required to have secured the appropriate model release authorization for their pictures.
  • Applicants must possess a current bank account in their nation of origin.

Selection Criteria:

The following five criteria will be used to evaluate photographers:

  • Track record for completing at least one prior documentary photo essay to a high standard;
  • The caliber of the proposed project and the narrative for which funding is requested;
  • The manner in which the project addresses potential solutions to the issue or issues it raises;
  • The manner in which the project makes an impact by collaborating with social, environmental, and/or community organizations / NGOs
  • Reason for submitting an application for this FotoAward

Application Date and Process

Photographers will need to send in their work-in-progress that they are hoping to support, along with a completed application form and one more finished photo essay on any subject that shows they can tell a story visually.

  • Filled application form
  • A project description and captions, together with a minimum of 10 Jpeg images (each about 2MB in size and 150 dpi) from the current photo essay for which funding is being requested.
  • A minimum of 15 Jpeg images (150 dpi, 2MB each) from a previously finished photo essay that includes project description and subtitles for a single theme.

The following 2 photo essays must be submitted:

  • Via We Transfer: Kindly enter a link in the designated field on the application.
  • Via a URL address for a specific body of work rather than a generic website; please include a link to a single slideshow.

Note: Jpeg files sent to organizers must be labeled with your name (first name surname 01.jpeg, for example) and include all embedded IPTC information: copyright, caption, date, and location. Furthermore, captions must be clearly displayed on any slideshow or cross-referenced on an accompanying word file attached with the application form if directed to a specific URL.
