About KAUST Photonics Summer Camp

Opportunity Details

The KAUST Photonics Summer Camp (PSC) is a sponsored research program from 4 weeks to 4 months. It comprises a core of hands-on, cutting-edge research projects in various areas of modern photonics, accompanied by workshops and technical training in using state-of-the-art nanofabrication and imaging facilities. 

It offers undergraduates and Master's students from across the globe the opportunity to participate in a research project in contemporary areas of photonics, such as semiconductor lasers, photonic integrated circuits, quantum technologies, optical communications, neuromorphic computing, and hyper-vision systems. 

The camp allows participants to acquire hands-on experience in lab experiments, obtain knowledge certification on state-of-the-art nanofabrication tools, attend workshops with students and entrepreneurs, and participate in exciting field trips. 

Students of the past editions concluded their works with articles in prestigious magazines and the filing of new patents.

KAUST Photonics Summer Camp Requirements

The PSC invites candidates who meet the following criteria to apply:

  • Recent graduates, senior undergraduates, or current master's students in electrical and computer engineering, physics, or related disciplines
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 out of 4.00 or higher
  • Possess strong English language proficiency
  • Demonstrate a strong motivation to work on research projects

Eligibility and Application Requirements

  1. Meet the academic requirements stated above
  2. Submit a complete application package, including:
    • Up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV)
    • Official transcripts (in English)
    • Copy of passport
  3. Pass interviews with KAUST faculty and administration

Application Date and Process

To apply for the Photonics Summer Camp, please submit the following documents in PDF format:

  1. Up-to-date CV highlighting your experience and academic achievements.
  2. Current transcript of your latest degree.
  3. Copy of your passport.

Online Application Process

  1. Create an Account: Register as an applicant on the PlutoEdu Portal. Click on the link to the application website to access this portal.
  2. Complete Application: Fill out the online application form. This should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. You can save your progress and return to the application later.
  3. Rank Hosting Faculty: Indicate your preferred research area by ranking the hosting faculty in order of preference (1st to 3rd).
  4. Recommendation letters are not required.
