About Juvenes Translatores for Secondary Schools in the EU

Every November on contest day over 3,000 teenagers translate a page of creative writing on a topical subject from any one of the EU's 24 official languages into any of the other 23.

The number of schools invited to enter the contest in each country is the same as the number of seats it has in the European Parliament - 720 in total across the EU. Up to five students per school can take part. Their efforts are evaluated by professional translators in the EU institutions to find the best translation from each country. The 27 winning students - one per EU member state - are invited to an award ceremony in Brussels, accompanied by teachers and parents.

Benefits of Juvenes Translatores for Secondary Schools in the EU

• The winners will be invited to an award ceremony in Brussels in the spring of 2025. DG Translation will pay travel and accommodation expenses for one winner, up to two accompanying parents and one teacher per country.

Juvenes Translatores for Secondary Schools in the EU Requirements

Only secondary schools can participate. The contest is not open to schools teaching languages through evening classes or to organisations providing similar language courses that are not part of the secondary school curriculum.

Schools must:

• be located in an EU country;
• be recognised by the education authorities of one or more EU country/countries;
• enter 2-5 participants born in 2007;
• have internet access;
• have the necessary IT equipment.
