About IIE – Scholars Rescue Fund (SRF) Fellowship Program
Opportunity Details
The only international program that organizes, finances, and supports fellowships for displaced and threatened scholars at participating higher education institutions worldwide is the Scholar Rescue Fund (IE-SRF) of the Institute of International Education. These one-year fellowships provide funding for temporary faculty positions in international universities, enabling IIE-SRF scholars to carry out their work in a secure environment.
1,108 researchers from 62 countries have been granted IIE-SRF fellowships, and they will be based in 502 host partner institutions in 58 different nations.

The IIE-SRF fellowship package comprises the following:
- One-year research or teaching job at a higher education institution in a safe area in any country in the world
- A fellowship grant of up to USD25,000 (renewable for a second and final year)
- Individual health insurance coverage
- Funding for relocation to the host institution
- Support for professional growth through reference guides and access to academic networks
- Career mentorship and advice on post-fellowship options
- In some cases, cash help with conference attendance and language training.

- Opportunities to disseminate or promote the fellow’s academic work or speak about their home country through IIE-SRF or partner events, media, or other venues

IIE – Scholars Rescue Fund (SRF) Fellowship Program Requirements
All applicants of the IIE-SRF fellowship should meet the following criteria:
- Researchers, professors, and public intellectuals who face threats and cannot continue their work in their home countries may apply to the IIE-SRF.
- Scholars from any country and any academic field or discipline are eligible to apply. Applicants are evaluated based on their academic credentials and expertise, work quality or potential, and the importance of the risks they face.
Preference goes to scholars who:
- Are have a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field and extensive teaching or research experience at a university, college, or other higher learning institution
- Have a track record of published research
- Display exceptional academic achievement or promise
- Are currently facing or have just fled immediate, targeted threats to their lives or professions in their home countries or countries of residence
- Are women and members of ethnic, racial, cultural, or religious minority groups and underrepresented individuals in their fields encouraged to apply?
- Will assist their academic communities or host academic communities.
Unfortunately, IIE-SRF does not usually accept applications from those who:
- Are looking to further their education, including doctoral studies, or to complete an academic training program;
- Having been displaced or dwelt in nations other than their home countries for more than two years;
- Possess citizenship or permanent residency in a secure second country;
- Have completed a two-year fellowship or another program for threatened scholars.

The IIE-SRF Selection Committee meets quarterly to review submissions and award fellowships. Applications revisions are in the order they are received.
