This program aims to catalyze positive changes within the Internet ecosystem, fostering innovation, diversity, and inclusion across various stakeholder communities and geographic regions.

The total amount available for grants in the first cycle is $10 million, which comprises minimum and maximum levels:

  • Grant awards ranging between $50,000 and $500,000
  • Disbursement of grants in installments
  • Opportunity to contribute to the stable and secure operation of the Internet’s unique identifier systems
  • Support for projects fostering innovation, diversity, and inclusion in the Internet community

ICANN Grant Program 2024 Requirements

The organizations should meet the following criteria:

  • Organizations must be charitable.
  • S.-based organizations must possess a 501(c)(3) determination from the IRS.
  • Non-U.S.-based organizations must demonstrate equivalency to a U.S. 501(c)(3) and support ICANN’s compliance with relevant U.S. laws.
  • No conflicts of interest allowed.
  • Organizations should meet due diligence standards.
  • Applicants must have a bank account in the organization’s name.

Eligible Projects and Activities:

 

  • Projects consistent with ICANN’s mission to confirm the stable and secure operation of the Internet’s unique identifier systems.
  • Initiatives supporting ICANN’s mission by:
    • It benefits the development, distribution, and evolution of Internet identifier systems.
    • They are providing capacity development.
    • They are advancing innovation and open standards for the Internet community.
    • They contribute to diversity, participation, and inclusion across stakeholder communities and regions.
  • Proposed activities should not duplicate existing ICANN-funded projects.

Ineligible Projects:

  • Political or lobbying activities, including attempts to influence legislation or public elections
  • Activities leading to private financial gain beyond reasonable employment salaries.
  • Unlawful activities according to the laws of the applicant’s country or project development location

Selection Process

  • ICANN staff will conduct initial reviews to ensure consistency with ICANN’s mission and funding themes.
  • Eligible applications will be referred to the Independent Application Assessment Panel for review.
  • The Panel will use assessment criteria outlined in the Grant Program Applicant Guide to deliver a rank order list.
  • The selection committee will decide based on ICANN’s final eligibility screening.
