About Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Okayama Award 2024
Excellent ESD projects in Japan and elsewhere are honored with the ESD Okayama Award. By showcasing their efforts, the Award seeks to both encourage ESD-related organizations and spread awareness of ESD in local communities across the globe.
To generate impetus, Okayama City established the ESD Okayama Award in 2015. The ESD Okayama Award is organized by the ESD Okayama Award Steering Board, which is made up of organizations that support ESD in Okayama City and throughout Japan. As ESD is a key enabler of SDG objectives, the initiative aims to advance the SDGs while promoting good ESD practices globally.

- Each prize winner will receive USD 3,000 for the expansion of their projects.
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Okayama Award 2024 Requirments
All applicants should meet these criteria:
- Organizations from any nation or region who carry out ESD projects in their local communities are welcome to apply for the Award.
- There can only be one application per organization.
- As of April 2024, projects that qualify for this Award have been going for at least two years.
- Early planning or development stages of projects are not eligible.
- While they may apply for other initiatives, organizations that have previously won the ESD Okayama Award are not eligible to apply with the award-winning projects.
Selection Criteria
The ESD experts will review the submitted applications based on the following criteria:
- Vision: The project addresses local issues to realize a sustainable society and clearly states the project’s objectives.
- Collaboration: The project has a clear and concise implementation plan with different collaborating stakeholders, either organizations or individuals;
- Integration: The project assimilates ESD’s environmental, social, and economic scopes.
- Innovation: The project describes innovative approaches and methods to the ESD;
- Status of Implementation: The project must have a track record of activities and documentation, including feedback and evaluation of beneficiaries and stakeholders
- Empowerment: The project should follow educational approaches such as communicating methods for problem-solving and promoting actions to build a sustainable future. The project also contributes to the behavior change of individuals, such as the transformation of values, attitudes, and activities and the empowerment of local communities.
- Future Strategy: The project has the expansion possibility in the future and brings positive changes to other communities as well;
Application Date and Process
Qualified organizations can submit their application through the following email:
- Please fill out the ESD Okayama Award 2024 application form and attach it to the other below-required documents. The Form should be in English or Japanese, including the project’s names and organization.
- Provide a 5 minutes video, slideshow, or 5-10 photos to introduce your project, upload the video to YouTube or Facebook and provide the URL in the required box.
- Supporting Documents should be along with the Application Form; the entire length of the supporting documents must not exceed five pages (A4 paper).
