About WFF Transformative Research Challenge (TRC)

Opportunity Details

The World Food Forum’s (WEF) Transformative Research Challenge (TRC) seeks to promote research and innovation in sustainable development to end hunger and transform our agrifood systems by launching an open international call for research proposals from young people worldwide. WFF’s annual theme, “Healthy Diets. Healthy Planet,” and one of the four betters—as well as a two-page concept paper offering an inventive research plan to help end hunger and strengthen our agrifood systems—are requested from teams of young and young-at-heart researchers.

Benefits of WFF Transformative Research Challenge (TRC)

Each reward has its own unique set of requirements for entry, which are listed below:

  • Global One Health (co-hosted with Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and FAO One Health Team (CJWZ))

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) One Health Team and Wageningen University & Research (WUR) are co-hosting this prize, which invites teams worldwide to submit One Health ideas to enhance the health of all species. The goal of this prize is to reduce the spread and impact of illnesses that endanger the health of humans and animals by developing safer and more resilient food systems, which will help avert pandemics in the future. Five winners will have the chance to attend the WFF flagship event in October 2024 and receive research funds of up to $10,000 USD.

  • Planet-Based Food (co-hosted with Meatless Monday and Simon Fraser University)

The goal of this prize is to find creative ways to influence consumer behavior in order to promote the eating of more plant-based foods and less meat. This could be a brand-new menu item or food product that is accessible, sustainable, and healthful; a tool for choosing the best foods; or a strategy for assisting customers in overcoming change-aversion obstacles. The purpose of this award is to incentivize people to switch to a more plant-based diet, which can help lower the burden of chronic diseases that can be prevented worldwide, protect valuable water and land resources, and slow down the rate of climate change, which poses a threat to the future of our planet. The WFF flagship event in October 2024, research funding up to USD 15,000, and the chance to travel will all be awarded to two winners.

  • Food Loss and Waste (co-hosted with FAO Nutrition and Food Systems Division (ESN))

Food loss and waste (FLW) has major social, economic, and environmental ramifications and is a major global concern. Currently, an estimated 13% of the world’s food is lost between harvest and consumption, missing the retail stage of the supply chain, and an additional 17% is wasted in homes, restaurants, and retail establishments. By improving food security and nutrition through greater food availability, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and easing strain on essential resources like land and water, this reward seeks to promote the transformation of agrifood systems. The winners will have the chance to share their research through FAO channels, be visible at the world WFF flagship event in October 2024, and have access to wide networks inside WFF and FAO.

Other advantages include:

  • Mentoring: To help 10 to 15 shortlisted teams “transform” their concept note into a concrete research output (such as a research proposal for grant funding or a research article for publication), they will receive one-on-one mentoring from globally renowned experts in their field.
  • Coaching: Before their final presentations, each team will get guidance on crafting a lightning talk.
  • Networking opportunities will be provided to participants with a global audience of up-and-coming leaders and public and private sector organizations, including the United Nations.
  • Through the WFF, young people everywhere will be able to present original research concepts and techniques to a worldwide audience. Teams that make the short list will be able to promote their research proposal to a global audience by showcasing it on the WFF website. The WFF website will highlight the shortlisted teams, and at the WFF Flagship Event stage, they will have the opportunity to present their research project to an international expert panel and a global audience.
  • In order to create ongoing visibility and encourage future development, shortlisted teams and the TRC winner may be involved in additional learning and exposure activities associated with the WFF, such as social media campaigns, case studies, and upcoming events.
