About International PhD Programme

Opportunity Details

As a PhD student in the International PhD Programme (IPP), you can work on exciting projects related to their overarching theme of Gene Regulation, Epigenetics & Genome Stability, as well as join our lively IPP community of 200 students from all over the world!

The IPP has participating labs from the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB), Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) and the University Medical Center (UMC). Their research groups offer projects in:

  • Ageing & disease
  • RNA biology
  • DNA repair & genome stability
  • Epigenetics & nuclear dynamics
  • Bioinformatics & computational biology
  • Gene regulation & evolution
  • Proteostasis & phase separation

Within these projects, you will have the chance to work closely with top scientists, learn valuable skills and get training in the latest techniques like CRISPR/Cas genome editing, next-generation sequencing (NGS), gene network modelling, mass spectrometry and super-resolution microscopy. International PhD Programme Requirements

Who can apply to International PhD Programme (IPP)?

  • They are looking for creative and ambitious students in the field of life sciences. You should have or expect a Master's degree qualifying you to work on one of our Research Topics. Fluency in English is also required.

Do I have to provide a certificate as proof of my English skills?

  • No. This is not a requirement, but proficiency in English, both written and verbal, is a prerequisite for entry to the IPP.

Is there an age limit?

  • There is no age limit to enter the IPP. 

What is the working language in the IPP?

  • The official working language in the IPP is English. 

I do not have a Master's degree. Can I apply?

  • If you finished your university studies with at least four years of fully credited education (typically 4 x 60 ECTS or equivalent), practical research work and a diploma, Master's or similar degree, you are eligible to apply. In case of outstanding grades in only a bachelor’s degree, please contact the IPP team.

Application Date and Process

During an ongoing call, you need to take the following steps to be admitted to the IPP.

Step 1: Have a look at the Projects Offered in the call you are interested in (either Molecular Mechanisms or Molecular Biomedicine). 
             You may also apply to both if you are interested in projects in both calls. 

Step 2: Apply via our online platform on Registration & Application.

Step 3: After thorough evaluation of all completed applications, the best candidates will receive an invitation for the IPP Interview Days.

 

To apply to the IPP you must provide the following:

  • Fully completed application form submitted before the relevant deadline
  • A Master degree or equivalent (1st Class BA Hons or BSc Hons) or anticipate receiving before enrolment
  • Full details of two referees, at least one of them should have supervised you in a research project
  • High level of both spoken and written English
