ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
Participants will gain hands-on experience contributing to cutting-edge research and program implementation at Shamiri Institute, a youth-led, data-driven nonprofit organization addressing mental health challenges among adolescents in Sub-Saharan Africa. The internship will emphasize:
- Research and Evidence Development:Support the collection, analysis, and synthesis of data from randomized controlled trials and other projects that underpin Shamiri’s evidence-based interventions.
- Programmatic Support: Assist in the design, delivery, and monitoring of mental health programs, ensuring cultural and contextual relevance.
- Collaboration and Learning: Work alongside Shamiri’s interdisciplinary team and global partners, while contributing to impactful, scalable solutions.
INTERNSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
- Location: Based in Nairobi, Kenya, the program provides an opportunity to work in one of Africa’s most vibrant cities and engage with its dynamic culture and professional networks.
- Impact-Focused: Interns will support Shamiri’s mission of providing low-cost, scalable mental health interventions to underserved youth.
- Professional Growth: Through mentorship and guided learning, participants will develop skills in research methodologies, cross-cultural program implementation, and evidence-based practices.
PROGRAM DETAILS
The program runs for eight weeks beginning in June 2025 (exact dates flexible), with participants expected to be in Nairobi for the duration of the internship.
Benefits of Harvard University-Shamiri Institute Internship Programme
- The internship is unpaid; however, interns will be given a modest travel and living stipend to support their expenses in-country. Exact stipend amounts will be communicated via internship offer letters. Interns will utilize their stipend to find their own housing. Housing recommendations will be provided by the host. Approximately two Harvard interns will be selected.
Harvard University-Shamiri Institute Internship Programme Requirements
- Applicant must be a continuing full-time student enrolled at Harvard University.
- The program requires an eight-week commitment starting at the beginning of June and lasting until the beginning of August. Exact dates are flexible.
- Applicant must have a strong interest in youth mental health, social impact, global health, and data-driven solutions.
- Applicant must have strong analytical skills, an ability to work collaboratively, and the ability to travel and live independently in Kenya.
- Preference will be given to applicants with backgrounds in psychology, public health, data science, and other related disciplines.
- Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate previous and continued interest in Africa.
