About BVA Foundation Biophilia Award

Opportunity Details

Established in 2019, this award recognizes professionals and organizations worldwide that have significantly impacted environmental thought, communication, and culture.

The award is based on Edward O. Wilson’s biophilia hypothesis, which emphasizes our deep connection with nature and all life forms.

The current Biophilia Award broadens its scope to include humanities and social sciences contributions that help reframe humanity’s relationship with nature. It aims to recognize narratives and interpretations that shape society’s perspectives and values regarding the environment.

Benefits of BVA Foundation Biophilia Award

Following are the awards and benefits details:

  • Monetary Prize: €100,000
  • Recognition: A diploma and commemorative artwork
  • Public Presentation: The award presentation will be at a public ceremony
  • Discretionary Use: Prize money at the awardees’ discretion

BVA Foundation Biophilia Award Requirments

All candidates should meet the below criteria:

  • Candidatures: Open to individuals or organizations of any nationality involved in environmental thought, communication, and culture
  • Joint Entries: Accepted for collaborative contributions from two or more individuals or organizations
  • Submissions: Contributions completed before December 31, 2023
  • Incompatibility: No candidate in this call may also submit an entry for the current edition of the Biodiversity Conservation Awards

Required Documents

All candidates should provide the following required documents for their applications:

  • Entry Form: A completed and signed entry form
  • Description of Contributions: A summary (maximum of 5 pages) of the candidate’s contributions to environmental thought, communication, and culture
  • Curriculum Vitae: For individual candidates
  • Supporting Materials: Up to five key materials, such as articles, essays, or multimedia materials
  • Letters of Nomination/Support: Up to five letters from experts or organizations in environmental communication, humanities, or social sciences

Selection Process and Criteria
 

Please review the selection process and criteria highlights as follows:

  • Evaluation Committee: Composed of researchers, experts, and professionals in the areas of nature protection and environmental sciences and humanities
  • Criteria: Quality, innovation, originality, broad social impact, and public recognition of contributions
  • Decision: The committee may combine entries for similar contributions or confine the award to one or some members of a group for their specific contributions

  • Include the name of the first candidate (alphabetically) in the email subject line and all documentation in English
  • Submit all required documents, as specified above, by the deadline of June 10, 2024, at noon Spanish Standard time
  • Letters of nomination or support must be sent directly by the signatories and include a reasoned account of the significance of the candidate’s contribution
