The Biozentrum invites young scientists with skill, ambition, and drive from around the globe to apply for the highly coveted and esteemed fellowships provided by the Biozentrum Basel International PhD Program.

Unlike numerous other PhD student programs that strive for a wide recruitment of candidates, the Biozentrum PhD Fellowships are awarded to a maximum of 10 successful candidates year on a competitive basis. A variety of extra benefits are provided to recipients in addition to a special rotation-based option for choosing a preferred research group, all of which support the academic achievement and professional opportunities of these PhD candidates.

Biozentrum PhD Fellowships 2024 Requirments

Requirements for the Biozentrum PhD Fellowships are as follows:

  • Candidates may hold any nationality.
  • On the date of the fellowship decision, candidates cannot have enrolled at the University of Basel as PhD candidates or entered into a PhD working contract with the institution.
  • Applicants must possess or intend to obtain a degree from an accredited university in order to be admitted to the University of Basel’s Ph.D. program.
  • Exceptional 4-year bachelor’s degree holders who are outstanding and usually not part of the Bologna system are also eligible to apply for this opportunity.
  • Research in a minimum of two labs (rotations) at the Biozentrum is required of fellows prior to beginning the research group for the PhD thesis. Each of these rotations lasts for a minimum of two months.

Required Documents

All applicants should provide the following supporting documents for their application:

  • PDF electronic versions of their master’s degree or diploma Transcripts and grades in PDF format
  • A one-page PDF resume or scientific résumé, at most
  • The names and contact details of two former faculty referees
  • An automated request for a reference letter will be sent to the referees.

Selection procedure

Biozentrum PhD Fellowship selection procedure is as follows:

  • All of Biozentrum’s group leaders will review the applications that are submitted after this open call date. The Program Committee will select 20–30 candidates based on input from their peers, and they will be invited to the Biozentrum for an interview week. The cost of lodging and transportation will be covered by the sponsor.
  • Applicants should include eight to ten group leaders so that individual interviews and lab visits can be scheduled during the interview week. Additionally, they ought to give a 10-minute presentation and a 20-minute question-and-answer session to the Program Committee and interested group leaders about their research. During these days, the applicant will receive personal guidance from a PhD fellow supervisor at the Biozentrum regarding the PhD program.
  • The candidate fellows will have two dinners with the chaperones and group leaders throughout the interview period. They will also be visiting Basel for cultural reasons and meeting with the PhD Club.
  • The candidates who will be offered fellowships will be notified at the conclusion of the interview week. The next six months will see the selected fellows begin their PhD studies.
