Beijing Normal University Type-B Scholarships Requirements

  • The candidate must fulfill the conditions listed in the BNU Admission Brochure for International Students.
  • The University does not provide applicants to Chinese-taught MA or PhD programs preparatory Chinese language training. Kindly send your HSK certificate in accordance with your program’s entrance requirements.
  • Candidates must not be the recipients of any other scholarships.
  • The following are the prerequisites for candidates’ age and degree:
    • be at least 25 years old and a recent high school graduate in order to be considered for undergraduate programs;
    • hold a bachelor’s degree and, at the time of application for master’s programs, not more than 35;
    • Hold a master’s degree and be under 40 years old to apply to PhD programs.

Documents Requirement:

  • Chinese or English version of the Chinese Government Scholarship Application Form
  • A duplicate of the Passport homepage. Please apply for a new passport before submitting the application if the applicant’s present passport does not match the requirements for validity (that is, if it expires before September 2023);
  • The highest diploma notarized. Applicants for diplomas must provide certified documentation from their current school attesting to their enrollment. Notarized translations into Chinese or English must be appended to documents written in languages other than Chinese or English;
  • Academic records (starting with the undergraduate program). Academic transcripts from the first to the last semester of the undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degrees, if applicable, must be supplied. The graduate school, student management department, or academic affairs office of the attending university will issue and seal these transcripts. They can be in Chinese or English, but if they are in a language other than English, certified English translations must be attached;
  • Five Language Qualification Certificates. Candidates pursuing programs taught in Chinese are required to provide official HSK reports that meet the relevant Chinese proficiency criteria. Candidates for other language-taught programs must provide appropriate language competency certificates—such as an IELTS or TOFEL report—in accordance with the standards of the universities;
  • Pre-admission paperwork.
    • Pre-admission paperwork from the Chinese institution of choice, such as an official acceptance letter, a pre-admission letter, or an invitation letter from a potential supervisor accepted by the Chinese university’s department of admissions for overseas students. The formal invitation letter or pre-admission letter must be printed on a special-purpose letter addressed to the intended Chinese university, sealed, and issued by the admission office for overseas students.
    • The following details, in either Chinese or English, must be included in the enrollment or invitation letter:
      • Information about the applicant: full name, country, birthdate, and name of the last attended university, among other things;
      • Graduate or doctorate students are the academic status in China;
      • Estimated length of stay in China. The study schedule will be made explicit, and
      • enrollment must take place no early than September 2023.
      • Details of the candidate’s Chinese supervisor, if applicable;
      • Summaries of the candidate’s research or study activities in China;
      • The language (English or Chinese) used in class;
      • The department of international students admission must seal the invitation letter given by the supervisor and include the department head’s signature and contact details.
  • A proposal for a study plan. A study plan, whether in Chinese or English, must have more than 1,000 characters or words; the Chinese supervisor of a PhD candidate must sign the proposal;
  • Letters of recommendation. Two reference letters from professors or associate professors (written solely in Chinese or English) must be turned in. These letters will outline the applicant’s goals for their education in China, their full range of skills, an assessment of their potential for future development, and any collaboration between supervisors or cross-university exchanges;
  • An illustration of art. Applicants may submit their own works through the system’s “Example of Art/Other Supporting Documents” in order to apply for degrees in art or design. Alternatively, applicants may choose to send these materials directly to the applied universities;
  • Those under the age of eighteen should send in the official documentation of their Chinese legal guardians;
  • A photocopy of the filled-out Foreigner Physical Examination Form in English; the applicant will retain the original copy. The form can be obtained from the dispatching authority and was created by the Chinese quarantine authority. Every item on the Foreigner Physical Examination Form must be covered by the physical examinations. Records that are missing any of these components—the official hospital stamp, the attending physician’s signature, or a sealed photo of the applicants—are deemed invalid. Since the results of a physical examination are only valid for six months, please choose the best time to have one.
  • Report on non-criminal records. The applicant must provide a current Non-Criminal Record certificate from the local public security agency. This certificate must be given no later than six months before the application deadline.

Important Notes:

  • The Chinese Government ScholarshipApplication Documents List and the Beijing Normal University admissions brochure requirements must both be met by the application materials that applicants submit.
  • The applicant may momentarily finish the application without sending this document if, at the time of filling out the Chinese Government Scholarship Application System, they have not yet received the Pre-admission Letter from BNU. However, the candidate needs to submit the Pre-admission Letter to the Chinese Government Scholarship Application System as soon as feasible after receiving it from BNU.

Admission and Enrollment:

  • After examining the application materials, BNU will select the nominees. With the CSC’s approval, nominated individuals will receive Chinese Government Scholarships to study in China.
  • For scholarship applicants who get several offers, CSC retains the right to select the host university. Even if accepted by more than one university, a recipient of a scholarship will only be awarded one scholarship.
  • After arriving in China, scholarship winners are not permitted to alter the host university, subject of study, or length of study specified on the admission letter.
  • If the winner of the award is unable to register by the deadline, the scholarship will not be held.
  • Recipients of scholarships shall lose their entrance and scholarship eligibility if they are unable to pass the physical examination following registration.

Application Date and Process

  • Click the application website and sign up in CSC Online Application System.
  • Kindly prepare the application materials and adhere to the instructions provided in the BNU admissions information for overseas students. Please sign up and pay the application fee on the “BNU International Student Application System” to submit an online application for a BNU program.
  • Carefully read the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System Instructions; register on the CSC website; fill up, print, and sign the Chinese Government Scholarship Application Form. Please select Type B when submitting an application through the Chinese University Program as a new student; Beijing Normal University’s agency number is 10027.
  • Please be aware that if you make any changes, you must submit the form again.
  • Send BNU all of your application materials by the deadline.
