Held annually in Banff, Alberta, Canada, from October 26 to November 3, the Festi has many experiences, including film screenings, guest speakers, seminars, and book signings. Notable events include the Mountain Film Festival World Tour, the Mountain Photo Essay Competition, and Mountain Culture programs such as the Adventure Filmmakers’ Workshop.

Competition Categories

Awarded to a book selected from the winners in the above categories:

  1. Adventure Travel: Non-fiction books focusing on travel to remote or rugged landscapes and their cultures.
  2. Mountain Fiction and Poetry: Fiction and poetry books centered on mountain themes, including narratives about climbing, exploration, and mountain culture.
  3. Mountain Literature: Non-fiction works such as memoirs, biographies, and narratives covering mountaineering, climbing history, and human experiences in mountain and wilderness areas.
  4. Environmental Literature: Books on the environment, specifically flora, wildlife, conservation, and climate change; Academic papers/texts are not accepted.
  5. Guidebook: Non-fiction books about physical activities in mountain environments, including hiking, climbing, and mountaineering, as well as “how-to” guides
  6. Mountain Image: Books primarily feature mountain images, with text in a complementary role. A Photo Competition jury will judge this category.
  7. Mountain Article: Articles or short essays under 7,000 words with mountain themes, including climbing, adventure, conservation, and mountain literature. Fiction and non-fiction pieces are accepted and published in print or digital form.
  8. Climbing Literature: Awarded to the best long-listed book on mountaineering or climbing.

Banff Mountain Book Competition 2024 Requirements

  • Entries must be first editions published in 2023 or 2024.
  • Each entry must include five finished or two advance reading copies, which will not be returned.
  • Submissions should also include a PDF or digital format.
  • New editions of previously entered titles are eligible if not previously submitted.
  • Authors or publishers can submit entries to avoid duplication.
  • Mountain Article submissions must be under 7,000 words and published in 2023 or 2024. No scholastic or research articles are accepted; each author can submit up to two articles.
  • Customs duties, shipping, and taxes are the entrant’s responsibility.
  • All works must be in English.
  • The online entry form must be submitted by July 2, 2024, with early submission encouraged.
  • Books or advance reading copies must be received by July 2, 2024.
  • Advance reading copies for titles published after July 2, 2024, must also be received by July 2, 2024, with final editions by July 31, 2024.
  • A 60-word synopsis must accompany entries.
  • A high-resolution image file of the book cover should be emailed.
  • Organizers reserve the right to select the appropriate category for submissions.
  • Entries may be used for promotional purposes.
  • Shortlisted category winners eligible for the Grand Prize will be announced in October 2024.
  • The Grand Prize announcement will be at the Festival on October 31, 2024.
  • Winning authors and publishers may be notified at the organizers’ discretion.
  • Jury decisions are final.
  • Posthumous works are not accepted.
  • Eligible titles may be displayed during the 2024 Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival.
  • Books aimed at children and young adults are not suitable for the competition.
  • Works by Banff Centre staff or current jury members are ineligible.
  • Submission implies acceptance of these regulations.
  • Banff Centre can sell books that are entered to support Mountain Culture programming.
  • Contact the competition coordinator if you have any difficulties meeting requirements.

  • The submission deadline for the Finished copies of titles as advance reading copies is July 31, 2024.
