Every year, a writer or group of reporters who produced the outstanding piece of journalism about Asia especially in 2023 is given a $10,000 prize. The effect of the work, its uniqueness, inventiveness, depth of study, and educational value in educating the public about Asia are among the evaluation criteria.
The late Osborn Elliott, a renowned journalist and former Newsweek editor-in-chief, is honored with the Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia, also known as the “Oz Prize.” Elliott became one of the first practitioners of “civic journalism,” which is the purposeful concentration of the journalistic endeavor on pressing public policy concerns. He also established new standards for reporting and editing.

Asia Society Osborn Elliott Journalism Prize Requirements
Criteria:
- A single written story or a collection of stories centered around a certain theme may be submitted.
- “Asia” is defined as the region stretching from Japan to Iran and from Central Asia to New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands for the purposes of the award. The Arab Middle East is left out.
- There can only be one nomination or direct application per writer or team. A single reporter’s submissions will be given extra weight.
- They welcome submissions from Asian publications.
- Journalistic articles must have appeared in English-language publications in 2023.
