About Amazon Web Services (AWS) Health Equity Initiative

Opportunity Details

In 2021, Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched the AWS Health Equity Initiative, a groundbreaking commitment to utilizing cloud technology to drive health equity worldwide. With an initial investment of $40 million over three years, the initiative has already made significant strides in addressing disparities in social determinants of health (SDoH) across the globe. Now, in 2024, AWS has announced an additional $20 million in funding, bringing the total commitment to $60 million in cloud credits and technical expertise.

Addressing Health Disparities with Digital Health Solutions

The World Bank estimates that more than 700 million people are unable to meet their basic needs related to healthcare and social services, broadly known as social determinants of health. Where people are born, grow, work, live, and age influence SDoH, which can be more important than healthcare or lifestyle choices in influencing health.

The Focus Areas

The Health Equity Initiative has expanded its focus to address the underlying root causes of health disparities, recognizing that as much as 80% of non-medical drivers of health influence health outcomes and quality of life. AWS will prioritize projects that aim to:

  1. Increase Access to High-Quality, Culturally Responsive Health Services: Eligible projects can include synchronous healthcare, increased access to high-quality diagnostic services, addressing bias in diagnostic processes, and cleaning existing data sets to improve accuracy for race, ethnicity, gender, disability, or other data points.
  2. Promote Resilient Communities by Increasing Access to Responsive Social and Community Support: Eligible projects can include leveraging technology to improve access to social services, nutrition, transportation, housing, or economic opportunities to improve health outcomes.
  3. Mitigate the Impact of Climate Change on Health and Quality of Life: Eligible projects can address diverse environmental health threats in an adaptive and culturally responsive manner, leveraging technology and data to control the spread of diseases and improve equitable air quality monitoring.
