About Summer Institute in Computational Social Science Program

The 2024 Summer Institute in Computational Social Science will be held at the University of Calabar from September 23 to 28, 2024. Funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation, the Summer Institute will bring together graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and beginning faculty interested in computational social science. The Summer Institute is for both social scientists (broadly conceived) and data scientists (broadly conceived). This institute is organized by Academic Hive for African Scholars.

The instructional program will involve lectures, group problem sets, and participant-led research projects. There will also be outside speakers who conduct computational social science research in a variety of settings, such as academia, industry, and government. Topics covered include text as data, website scraping, digital field experiments, machine learning, and ethics. There will be ample opportunities for students to discuss their ideas and research with the organizers, other participants, and visiting speakers. Because we are committed to open and reproducible research, all materials created by faculty and students for the Summer Institute will be released open source.

Summer Institute in Computational Social Science Program Requirments

Participation is restricted to Postgraduate students (MSc, Ph.D.), early-career University Faculty, and Industry Professionals with an interest in applying data science techniques to addressing pressing social problems. They welcome applicants from all backgrounds and fields of study, especially applicants from groups currently under-represented in computational social science. About 15 participants will be invited, and participants are expected to fully attend and participate in the entire one-week program. Participants with less coding experience will be supported by teaching assistants to complete a set of courses on the R programming language using this platform before the Institute.

Selection Criteria

Applicants for the SICSS-Calabar will be selected based on the following criteria:

• Research and teaching in the area of computational social science
• Contributions to public goods, such as creating open-source software, curating public datasets, and creating educational opportunities for others
• Likelihood to benefit from participation
• Likelihood to contribute to the educational
  experience of other participants
• Potential to spread computational social science to new intellectual communities and areas of research.

Applicants must submit the following documents:

(1) C.V.

(2) A brief statement about why you wish to attend SICSS-Calabar (Not more than 500 words),

(3) Share a writing sample (this could be any piece of writing you own. Published or unpublished)

(4) A supporting letter from a supervisor/head of department/line manager/mentor that can attest to applicant's competence/potential and availability.
