Researchers working at postdoctoral levels in the field of international politics as well as professionals in the media, business, civil society, diplomatic services, and politics are welcome to for this opportunity. A resident of the Academy in Bonn must be able to complete a fellowship, which can last anywhere from three to ten months.
Tracks of the Fellowship:
Candidates may apply to either of the two tracks listed below:
- Academic Track: For initiatives that clearly state how they will advance knowledge of international politics, link to current or developing scholarly debates, and have an explicit academic focus.
- Practitioner’s Track: For initiatives that explore international politics from the standpoint of real-world experience in a related professional discipline and clearly state how they want to further knowledge of the subject.
Benefits of Academy of International Affairs NRW Fellowships
- Every Fellow and the Academy come to a customized agreement that takes into consideration the financial situation at their home institution. It is anticipated that the Fellows would not have any financial difficulties as a consequence of their stay in Bonn.
- It is appropriate to pay for a replacement to perform one’s duties or to offer a monthly stipend. The Academy also covers travel expenses to and from Bonn as well as housing while residing there.
- The Academy finds the Fellows and their families appropriate housing in Bonn. The costs are covered by the Academy.
- The Academy’s building, located near the banks of the Rhine, is where the Fellows are kept. Bad Godesberg villa community is home to the Academy. The building functions as a meeting place for guests and Fellows who would like to extend an invitation. In addition to providing reading materials through its library, the Academy also provides technology tools.
Academy of International Affairs NRW Fellowships Requirements
- Academics and researchers of all nationalities who are exceptionally talented and well qualified are the target audience for the Academy’s Fellowship Program.
- Applicants from all disciplines who are engaged in research in the Academy’s thematic area are invited to apply.
- Partners and kids are welcome. The Academy helps place students in local (international) schools, daycare facilities, and kindergartens.
- Applications pertaining to science and technology studies are encouraged, provided that they tackle relevant issues related to social dynamics. This covers economics, history, sociology, political science, and legal studies.
- Established university professors are the major target audience, while younger academics and scientists (with at least a degree) are also targeted.
- Short-term fellowships are available to professionals with experience in business, politics, diplomacy, non-governmental organizations, and the media.
- The primary topics of this conversation are the relationship between science and practice as well as the application of scientific findings in real-world settings.

Applicants need to submit the following:
- The following files collected into a single PDF:
- A motivation letter;
- A proposal* outlining their intended academic project at AIA NRW (maximum 5 pages, including an abstract); this proposal should include guiding (research) questions, a synopsis of the current status of research in the field, a detailed work plan and timeline, targeted outputs, and an explanation of the expected value of the stay in Bonn within the unique environment of AIA NRW;
- A brief CV (maximum 2 pages).
Additionally for the academic track:
- Electronic copies of two to three recent journal publications, as well as a comprehensive list of publications.
